St Marks NWR - 02 May 2021

Lighthouse flats were alive today - picked up 12 trout, 22" to 17", along with a spanish and a jack. Everything came on the 'Lighthouse clouser' - olive over chart over white with pink fluoro fiber throat. The fish seemed amped up - really fought well. I saw lots of other fish being caught, including a large red on a pinfish.

Wading the bars whenever possible - I hate fishing out of a kayak but sometimes you have to. It's so much less aggravating wading then being in a kayak.

Your Lighthouse colors seem like a good match for our area. Been using it on darker water/ overcast days and tutti fruitti (chartreuse over pink) in clear water/bright days. Glad you had a good day. I splashed the boat at Carrabelle yesterday and fished some behind Dog Is. and east end of SGI. Lots of ladies but not much else, 1 throwback trout and a jack. Was a nice day for sure.

Gotcha. We saw someone throwing the fly from a kayak on Sunday morning when we rolled out of the lighthouss. It looked exhausting.

Agree Terrier!! I think the best inshore skiff are my two feet and legs. Unfortunately, too many places ya would sink up to your eyeballs, get eaten by an alligator, or spend all day getting there with no time for fishing. While on foot you can position yourself for best casting. Likewise, boat handling skills are so important to success whether it be a kayak, skiff, or drift boat.

I would hate to have someone listen to me while fishing from a kayak - every other word would be bleeped out. A paddle board would be better for casting since you could stand but the wind effects would be worse.

Flats were good today - 14 trout, nothing under 17", with 8 19" or bigger (two overslots at 22', 21' today). Clousers and intermediate line. Saw lots of catching going on with other kayaks and boats.
The water is very clear and still somewhat cool, but that will be changing this week if the forecast holds.

Sounds like a great day with lots of pull backs. Son and I went east of lighthouse yesterday and fished some deeper water with limited success and then went creek fishing. I only managed a trout for the box on a lighthouse special, but he did well on reds up to 30" and others on spinning gear.

I've been lucky - no puffers so far. I'm still waiting for my first redfish and flounder of the year

Not so good today - strong east wind made it tough. Did get my first redfish of the year - 21" on a clouser. And my first puffer of the year. Added a jack and had something get off after a few head shakes, but no trout.

A redfish is worth several trout. 8)
