Unregistered Anglers in State’s Largest Fishing Competition Lose Chance to Win New Boat, Motor and Trailer Prize Package Valued up to $80,000
No winners named after 12, signature tagged redfish caught since competition start on July 1

Orlando, Fla. – Aug 13, 2020 – CCA Florida, the state’s leading organization dedicated to marine fisheries conservation, education and advocacy, announced seven, signature division tagged redfish have been caught since the start of its statewide fishing competition, CCA Florida STAR presented by Yamaha, but no winner has been named, as the anglers who caught these coveted fish were unregistered for STAR.

The twelve iHeart Radio Tagged Redfish caught have been from Pinellas, Sarasota, Walton, Escambia, Hernando, Martin, St Lucie and Citrus counties, and all coastal counties in Florida have, on average, four, tagged redfish. The iHeart Radio Tagged Redfish division is STAR’s signature division offering registered anglers the opportunity to win his or her choice of a boat, motor and trailer package from Contender Boats, Pathfinder Boats, Hewes, Carolina Skiff, Yamaha Outboards and Rolls Axle Trailer. Prizes are valued up to $80,000 and anglers must be registered in the competition to win.

“We are ready to award a new boat to a registered STAR angler who catches an iHeart Radio Tagged Redfish,” CCA Florida STAR Director Leiza Fitzgerald said. “This year, we released 167 tagged redfish along Florida’s coastal waters and every tagged redfish gives someone the opportunity to win a new boat, motor and trailer package – the only catch is, you must be registered for STAR!”

In its sixth year, CCA Florida STAR presented by Yamaha, is the largest, family-friendly saltwater fishing competition in Florida. The nearly 100-day competition invites anglers of all ages and skill levels to participate because unlike traditional fishing tournaments, STAR focuses on conservation and offers nearly $500,000 in prizes and scholarships just for catching fish. Recognized as a ‘catch, photo and release’ competition, STAR’s smart phone app eliminates the requirement for anglers to harvest or capture and transport fish.

STAR has a total of 17 divisions, including the Youth Scholarship Division presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, giving kids (ages 6 to 17) the chance to win scholarships, with $100,000 available. Additional divisions include ladies, kayak, guides and many more. Most division winners are determined by a random drawing, not by biggest fish, giving anglers of all skill levels a shot at winning.

STAR’s technology-based format encourages participants of all ages to protect and conserve Florida’s fisheries for today and future generations.

One of the tagged fish was caught off Alligator Point, but the guide and anglers were not registered. Tagged reds have also been landed in Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola area. All missed out on their choice of a brand-new boat, motor and trailer package.

Fishing continues through October 4. You can't win if you aren't registered.

Florida’s Youth Anglers to Earn Community Service Hours and Scholarships in Statewide Fishing Competition
CCA Florida STAR presented by Yamaha offers students $100,000 in scholarships and community service during the nearly 100-day fishing competition

Orlando, Fla. – August 10, 2020 – CCA Florida, the state’s leading organization dedicated to marine fisheries conservation, education and advocacy, offers Florida’s youth anglers opportunities to win scholarships and earn community service hours by catching fishing and picking up trash, respectively, during its statewide fishing competition CCA Florida STAR presented by Yamaha.

In its sixth year, STAR is the largest, family-friendly saltwater fishing competition in Florida. The nearly 100-day event invites anglers of all ages and skill levels to participate, as it specifically designed two divisions for kids and conservation enthusiasts, the Youth Scholarship Division presented by Academy Sports+ Outdoors and the Costa Kick Plastic Trash Division.

The Youth Scholarship Division is open to kids ages 6 to 17 and offers two, $25,000 scholarships and ten, $5,000 scholarships for a total of $100,000 in winnings. The Trash Division gives students the chance to improve coastal habitats and complete community service hours, as each five-gallon bucket of trash collected, disposed of and submitted through the STAR app equates to 30 minutes of community service time.

“Unlike traditional fishing tournaments, STAR encourages youth participation, focuses on conservation and offers $100,000 in scholarships too,” CCA Florida STAR Director Leiza Fitzgerald said. “This year, summer plans have changed for so many, fishing is one activity that can be done COVID safe and is easy, plus STAR gives kids the chance to be outdoors, conserve coastal resources and make lifelong memories.”

New to 2020, STAR broadcasts a weekly show, STAR Search, detailing the latest highlights, sharing tips on how to succeed in the competition and featuring live interviews from some of the industry’s most well-known captains. The show’s third episode, exclusively discusses the Youth Division, and the vast opportunities for STAR’s 6 to 17-year-old participants, and the fourth episode is all about the Trash Division.

STAR is free for CCA Florida youth members (ages 6 to 17) and for those who need to become a member, youth membership is only $10. STAR’s technology-based format encourages participants of all ages to protect and conserve Florida’s fisheries for today and future generations.

STAR has a total of 17 divisions, including open, ladies, kayak, guides and many more. Most division winners are determined by a random drawing, not by biggest fish, giving anglers of all skill levels a shot at winning.
