Florida Jr B.A.S.S. Nation out of the St. Johns River

High school bass fishing has become popular over the last 10 years. College bass fishing first hit the scene during the first part of the new millennium. There are two major players who offer scholarships, FLW and B.A.S.S.
If you’re high school does not offer fishing as a program, there is still hope.

Just ask youth anglers Gavin Harwood and Taylor Collins. The middle school they attend does not offer fishing as a team sport, however a local bass fishing club in Tallahassee is sanctioned and youth anglers can qualify for the same awards as other middle/ high school participants.
Gavin and Taylor fished their very first Florida Jr BASS Nation tournament through Capital City Bass Hunters this past week on the St Johns river.
Early bands of foul weather from Tropical Storm Sally, combined with day one jitters had the team of Harwood and Collins bringing only one bass weighing 1.46 pounds to the scales. With 120 teams in the tournament this isn’t the best of starts but the boys were nowhere near finished.
Day two started the same, winds and rain hindered travel but the determined young men and their boat captain Chris Harwood, pushed on. Halfway through day two something magical happened. First one fish, then another. The boys put together a pattern that would have them boating bass the rest of the day.
Imagine their excitement as they stepped to the stage with a full bag of tournament bass weighing 16.51 pounds, the second largest bag of the tournament, this gave Gavin and Taylor the victory in their very first State Trail tournament.
Along with 1st place hardware is a trip to the State Championship on Lake Okeechobee on June 12th & 13th 2021. Content by Cliff Mundinger Tallahassee Democrat

So proud of these two young men!!!

Congrats to Gavin and Taylor. That is awesome Chris! I know you were a proud father watching them on stage.
