Out Deep 11-10

Post by Srbenda »

With a lovely weather forecast, and water temps low enough that the bay would be barren of any fish, we opted for some offshore action . We hit a few spots in close, and trolled a few deep divers for gags, with no success, partially hindered by the fact that it was almost a full moon.

We picked up a few sea bass on cut bait, and finally decided to head to deeper water.
We made it out to about 28' and found some nice bottom, and we drifted some freshly caught sand perch, and kept the cut bait down deep. Although the current was moving quickly, a 1/2oz weight was enough to get the bait down to the bottom, and the bites were frequent. We probably tossed back over 30 small black sea bass, and kept quite a few small sand perch for future use.

Squid seemed to work a little better than cut bait, and it also lasted longer. We ended up with a nice cooler of grunts and bsb's for our efforts.

We also saw a Lund at the Fish Camp with Missouri numbers, but it's a pretty unusual boat to see in this area.

All the fish will be baked this evening, and then picked for fish dip/ fish salad. This method maximizes the amount of meat that you get from smaller fish, and is much easier without the added filet effort.

Nicely done. Good eats there.

At least that Missouri tinny had the right motor!
