Mexico Beach 5/2 and 5/3

Post by bbb »

Hit the water for two days of 1’ or less seas. Forecast was pretty accurate both days. Day 1 found us 23 miles out catching big Beeliners and small Red Snapper. We ended the day playing with some AJs and apparently a good size shark.

Sunday was suppose to be a early trip out and an early trip in for some beach time. Didn’t work out that way though. Hit the water at 8am in search of Mangroves. Stopped 8 miles out and tried 3 spots with little luck. At 11:15 our luck changed when “the man in the brown suit” showed up. We quickly got a live bait in the water and it was on. 30 minutes later and we had our 1st cobia of the year. 50” to the fork and 62# on the scale.

Now our plan was to go play with the AJs again and then hit the beach before heading home. Got to Saturdays AJ spot and they were not home. But the snapper were. We got them chummed up behind the boat and site-fished with flatlined live sardines and cut bait for 3 straight hours of bent pole fun. I told the boys this was an epic bite and that the beach would have to wait for another weekend. Our friends even showed up on their boat and took advantage of the bite and our trolling motor. Poor mans spot lock.

Caught 1 mangrove for every 5 RS. Ended up with 12 Mangroves in the cooler.

Epic bite, 21 hours of fishing, best fishing weekend in a while.

Nice! Beautiful weather this weekend.
Excellent cobia there!

We saw a massive hammerhead this weekend- there are certainly some monsters...

:-D Now that's a fishing report!!! Very nice haul and great pics . Thanks for posting. Kids must have tried to subdue that cobia by beating it with the gaff lol. :-D

Outstanding trip and report. That's a quality ling and some tasty meals. :lick: And there's nothing wrong with mangroves--on the rod or the table.

Bet you didn't get much of an argument about skipping the beach.
