Offshore Sat 6/26

Post by Crazytazman »

Left Lanark at 0400 heading out to 65ft. Wet ride out and just a bit bumpy. Was excited to get offshore again to get some red snapper. Opening weekend we got our limit plus a few grouper. Arrived at 65 ft and first drop produced a 30in gag. Just knew we were gonna have an epic day. Not the case. That was the only bottom fish we got. Couldn't hold baits on bottom even using 16oz weights. I went to all my spots in 65ft and couldn't mark a thing. Decided to push on out to 100ft and got the same results. Three weeks ago the sonar lite up like Christmas morning but yesterday couldn't find them. Decided to head back in to 65ft. Started trolling from the S tower back to the O. Pulling stretch 30 and X Rap Magnum 40's and ballyhoo. Pick up several kings in the 30 to 35lb range. All the king's were caught in the X Rap 40.
Not sure if it was the raging current, full moon or our baits but we couldn't find any grouper or snapper. I looked in over a dozen areas from 65ft to 100ft and everything was empty. I wonder if in the 1st 2 weeks of the season did the areas get overfished. I thought for sure we would find some red snapper. But that's how it goes. Will be in the Atlantic next few trips. Will give the gulf a break for a while. Tight lines all.

I went out Thursday am to 85-90’ . Bite was off except for some lanes. We were just here a week ago and bite was good.tried a couple more spots close by, nothing!about noon I headed towards S tower to fish some spots there. I still had 10 miles to go when I reached 100’, put it in neutral and saw a blip on bottom machine. “Drop a line down” , both rods double over! Put the spot lock down and 30 minutes later had 3 man limit ARS. No bite until 12:30 , we left them chewing.

The X rap 40 magnum 40 wahoo color caught all the king's this past weekend. In my original post I said x rap but I mis spoke or typed. It produced grouper and snapper two weeks ago. The stretch 30 green and yellow worked as well.

I’ve been repainting/refinishing some of my old stretch 25 & 30’s got a couple similar to those. Image

Something I tried last week cleaning some lures: used a magic eraser. Might be common knowledge but it worked well.

Yea all mine were totally different colors that I never used or the paint was pretty much gone. I finish with a two part epoxy that will make the lure much durable than what you get out of the box.
