Cobia Humbled us

Post by geofish »

Snuck out today and pushed through 2-3 foot waves far enough to know we weren't going to make it to snapper depth. We stopped on a public reef (I'm legally prohibited from saying which one) and picked up a few grunts, but were hoping for something bigger. We put out the chum bag and some live pinfish, two on the bottom and two on the surface. And then we proceeded to get our butts kicked by cobia. Big cobia. Six or seven hit the pins, ripped line, and proceeded to humble us with broken lines (50 lb braid), leaders frayed on the artificial reef, and one leader knot (mine) that untied itself. The two cobia we put eyes on (one swam under the boat and did 2 half jumps on the other side) were in the 60 lb range.
Score was cobia - 7, Sam & George 0.
I've caught cobia before, but these guys humbled us.
We'll be back . . .

Well, it wasn't as big as the ones that got away last week, but I'll take it!
