Panacea trip report

Post by Rhodes »

We made our first trip down to Panacea since last October. We fished Saturday and Sunday. We launched Saturday morning at daybreak out of Mashes Sands and fished several spots in Ochlocknee Bay and only managed a sail cat, a croaker, and a small sand trout. We then relocated to Rock Landing and fished the flats out at Shell point. We tried some reds and not even a sniff. We then fished for trout and caught about 12 to 14 but only two made it to the cooler. It was a tough disapointing day with tough conditions. A nice seafood platter at Posey's that night sure didnt disappoint though. Sunday morning we launched out of Rock Landing again af daybreak. It was the top of the tide and we headed straight to our redfish hole and it was on. We caught 15 to 20 reds, most around the 14" mark and one nice 25" for the cooler. We then fished for trout. The bite was much better but the short to keeper ratio was about the same. We caught about 40 to 50 but only 6 made it to the cooler. The water temp was around 70 early warning a few degrees throughout the day. Nice warm days around 80 but a strong east wind early each day calming down some in the afternoons. The flats just did not seem to be teaming with life like I expected for mid May. Didn't see a lot of surface activity and didn't catch a lot of the trash fish you normally expect. All in all the trip was still very enjoyable to be back in Florida.
