Oct 2022 Daytona New Smyrna Beach Orlando

Post by CaptMikeSavedow »

Autumn 2022 is arriving in East Central Florida with east breezes, migrating mullet schools along the beach and into the Intracoastal Waterway, mornings are feeling a little cooler as summer comes to an end, schooling inshore gamefish are returning from up north after spending the summer in cooler waters up the coast, Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Pompano to name a few. The ICW water level has been rising with the east winds after low water levels most of the summer, the influx of ocean water filtering into the system will also begin the clearing process, with clearer water during our cooler time of year. The northern Mosquito Lagoon backcountry is known for it’s variety of different saltwater fish species, is a nursery estuary, lots of fish living their first couple years growing up with some species going to the ocean as they mature into adults. Local resident Guy and brother were out with me recently catching a good mixed bag of species including Mangrove Snapper, Bluefish, a couple Snook, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and a good size Black Drum giving a fun battle on light tackle …………….

Some better size Jack Crevalle as well as schooling smaller sized ones are a normal fish widespread throughout the Intracoastal Waterway region in the fall of the year, they chase baitfish and shrimp right up to the surface putting on a good show with sight casting opportunities as they show themselves attacking with white water splashes, Stephanie from Maryland and her son caught a bunch of them, here showing off a good one ……………

Had a fun Fly Fishing charter with Payton from Tennessee, a few backwaters species caught on fly, including a few fun jumping Ladyfish, some of which were surface attacking baitfish giving us sight fishing and catching ………….
