Jan 2023 Mosquito Lagoon New Smyrna Beach Backcountry

Post by CaptMikeSavedow »

Winter 2023 is upon us here on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, water temperatures dropping into chilly winter levels with clearing water clarity, fish congregating into the holes when chilly and coming on the flats during sun shiny days. Winter fish like Sheepshead and Bluefish now common catches for a few months, Redfish, Black Drum, Seatrout and Snook gather together into their winter patterns. With clear water we go stealthy with light rigs and smaller size baits and lures, fish are eating a smaller meal during the winter months. Bluefish like a quick flashy small size lure, when encountering schools, are lots of fun with aggressive Blues. Still some Spotted Seatrout around like this nice one Jeff from New Jersey caught recently ……………….

We regularly catch surprise fish in the backcountry, this time was a couple Permit like this one by long time regular client Chris from Orlando …………….

Black Drum are a regular rod bender here in Edgewater backwaters, most are modest size up to about 5 lbs or so, hanging in holes and along channel bottoms, Matt from Indiana with a fun Drum ……………...
