ORLANDO

Paddleboards, canoes and kayaks will not have to register for a permit with the state. The proposal was shot down at Florida Fish and Wildlife workshop Wednesday.

When we reached out to the FWC about the permitting proposal, their Executive Director, Nick Wiley, said they have no intention of increasing fees through a permitting program.

“Today, a group of citizens and stakeholders charged to make recommendations to FWC’s Boating Advisory Council considered a proposal for expanding vessel registration to non-motorized boats in Florida. The FWC appreciates the work of this advisory group, but we are not supportive of increasing fees on Floridians or visitors who participate in non-motorized boating. The FWC greatly values our boating community and will continue to work hard to keep Florida’s standing as the boating capital of the world without increasing costs and fees.”

I have had to learn a little more and get over some of my issues with canoes and kayaks do to members of my immediate family joining the plastic navy. But , I think it would be a good idea if FWC did more to educate some of the users about boat ramp and channel etiquette. I have also run up on plenty of power boaters that could use some education as well.

If the money would 100% go to our public woods/waters/ramps etc. I don't see where a $20 per year fee would break anyone. Problem is the money wouldn't go to public woods/waters/ramps etc. That could be a lot of money going to an agency that is barely surviving and supposed to help/protect the woods and water for us anglers/hunters. Oh well...

Apparently FWC does not support this.

I see very little difference between this and bicycles, swimmers, etc. Soon they'll want to charge us to breath.

Most Kayakers would prefer to not have ramps or docks or anything they would provide.

Are we going to need a permit to go hiking next.
