Lake Talquin 5/14/14 and 5/16/14

Post by Poopong McPlop »

I'm gonna keep 5/14 brief. We fished the full moon and made all 3 feeding times. The conditions were great for this full moon of May, surface temps were in the high 70s and touched the 80s in the afternoon. There was a little wind and an approaching storm front on both sides of the lake that wouldnt reach us until sundown. We launched at Luther hall to a calm main lake and we immediately fished the first main lake point we saw. We were at the tail end of the feeding time but the fish were still in shallow water. After managing a 15" bass, and a couple bream we headed to the pads in the goat island cove. The sonar was eerily quiet on the approach and I didnt have a good feeling. We waited until the 11am feed and only caught channel cats during this feeding period. The last feed of the day was 5-7pm and we headed to Harvey creek, once again almost all we caught was catfish, but we did manage a few Blue gills and shell crackers. After getting home and checking the dam water release, I see that the City of Tallahassee let the lake down for the approaching storm. This was the X factor that made this full moon a very bad day to fish.

We returned today to salvage something from this full moon of May. There was a cold front upon us and the main lake dropped into the low 70s. The crappie late spawn on the dam side of Talquin, so we came armed today with a bucket of minnows since we also saw a couple people crappie fishing on 5/14. After having scouted Harvey creek the trip before, I knew exactly where to take us this morning. We found a large section of pads closest to open water with flooded timber inside the pads and we settled in. The cold front hurt the morning feed, but not as much as the city dropping the water level prior to the storm. We managed several crappie before the feed ended at 8:40. Our largest was about 13" and we got him right at the closing bell of the feeding time. During the off times we fished steep ledges on one of the points of the main lake for Harvey creek with only a little luck. Lots of action on the sonar, but no takers except for a catfish. The last feed of the day was 1-3pm, for this one we hedged all our bets on the boy scout area since the wind started up from the north and made the Leon county side creeks harder to fish. We found the first creek on the right in the boy scout area and fished near the mouth of the creek. There was a ton of bait feeding by the mouth of the creek the entire time. Because of the large bait presence we found actively feeding crappie in this area immediately. At 1pm a minor wave of Crappie entered the pads, as well as a school of peanut bass. We caught several until 3pm and the bite tapered off. We headed in to rough conditions on the main lake. Another good full moon of May
