Video of Topwater Frog Hits

Busy year at the office and home has limited my abilities to chase cobes this year so in the absence of trips to the coast I've kept my sanity with trips to the pond.

Few weeks ago Bman asked if I had any video of lily pad hits he could share with another friend who owns a lily-pad filled pond but rarely fishes. Shared video shows 14 topwater hits (if I counted right). MUCH more fun to watch with volume turned way up so the hits can be heard.

Find time, I'll try and follow up with some footage of a few actual catches. :-)

Leaving for Canada this Tuesday for a week in Quatico National Park canoeing to a bass, northern pike, walleye lake. Hope to do the same thing as in the video.

Worst thing a parent can do to a young child is let them experience this action. They will be hooked for life and a constant nag to dad "When we going fishin' Dad?" Hope you all get to enjoy this pleasure as I did, both to my daughter and to my Dad.

Love fishing heavy cover with frogs. What are you doing with your right had when you cast? Looks like you are bringing it back to you but can't tell what for.

Excellent vids BBG! Love to see stuff like that. I love frogs 'cause they're pretty much weedless and cast far, hate 'em 'cause it's so hard to get a solid hookup with 'em.

The thing that will make me near swearing and throwing the rod in is when you're fishing a sinking plastic worm or creature bait and despite your best efforts the line happens to get into that "V" of a lily pad AGAIN causing a snag AGAIN making you have to paddle all the way over there through nearly impenetrable vegetation to retrieve it AGAIN rather than losing ANOTHER expensive hook and worm. VEXATION I tell you!

I bought a top water frog to try and fish the lily pads that almost all the ponds I fish are full of. Got quite a few strikes like that but never hooked one single fish. Finally gave it to my son to try. He had the same results.

Guessing you may have seen the other video I posted, Red Dawg, but it IS possible to catch them on top water frogs in the pads even if the ratio of hook-ups to catches can be admittedly tough.

Thing I do like about using them is that the average weight of the fish I catch is quite a bit bigger with the top water frogs than when using other lures. Few things that help are waiting for a second or two before going for the hook-set (easy to say / hard to do!), pulling the frogs along the edge of cover or through spotty patches with open holes versus too thick of pads (bass often hit in the holes anyway), and using a heavy rod AND heavy line to best wrestle hooked fish quickly.

My son and I were fishing frogs in pads a few years ago. He was probably 12 at the time. I noticed his hookup ratio was much better than mine. I started watching him and noticed that he was only partially paying attention during the retrieve. Finally occurred to me that his lack of attention was allowing just enough extra time for the frog to be inhaled a little deeper before the hookset. I learned something that day but still remain less effective than him.

Don't know about the new ones, but back in my tournament days. The frogs had a weep hole in their arse. Squeeze them and let just a little water in them and they would sag down like a natural fog when you stopped the retrieve, therefore better hookups. JUST SAYING try it!
