Standard VHS Handheld

Post by dbplug »

Hi Folks, thanks in advance for your feedback.

I have a Uniden handheld VHS radio that i regard as nearly a POS. I do not venture any more that 6-7 miles offshore. I am considering a Standard 460s or 470S. Am wondering if anyone has any experience with these models, or Standard in general.

.02 and HO's are welcome.

Standard and Icom are the industry leaders and are good choices for the boat. That being said, even the best handhelds are not going to get more than 5 miles of range. They just don't have enough power.

If you have room on the boat you should have a fixed mount radio that outputs 25 watts. Save the handhelds as backups. For what you'll pay for a nice handheld, you can get a really nice fixed mount.
