Econfina 3/21/07

Post by mattfsu7 »

Went to Econfina with the Grim Reeler on Wed. Beautiful day and we had the ramp and the river virtually to ourselves. We were heading out of the mouth at about 9:30 am with low tide at 11:30. The temp in the river and inshore was 61.

We fished the creeks between the Econfina and Aucilla as best we could with the skinny water from 10 am til 2 pm with only a small trout and a bluefish to show for our efforts. This was somewhat expected because of the low tide, but it did give us a chance to look for good structure for the afternoon's high tide.

We were both using Gulps under CTs which killed them last fall. Grim tied on a gold spoon sometime around 2 pm and had his first red in the boat about 30 minutes later. This one was 22" so in the cooler he went :lick:. I was stubborn and stayed with the Gulp/CT combo, but had to switch after the Reeler was bringing in his second 22" red about 30 minutes later :smt013 .

Within 15 minutes of putting the spoon on, I had my first and only red at the boat :D . He was about 21" with 3 spots and we had our limit. This fish hit the bait 3 different times on 2 separate casts, very aggressive. By this time the water had warmed up to 66 and it was dead on high tide, about 4:30 pm.

All the action was at the end of the day and with no action on the flats we didn't have much to do during the low tide, but seeing how I wasn't at work, we caught dinner, we had the place to ourselves and the weather was beautiful it is hard to ask for a better trip. Now we are just waiting for a few weeks more for the water to warm up and then we can hopefully fill up the low tide time out on the flats.

In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. And we will understand only what we are taught.

It was a nice day to fish. And Mattfsu7 is right, the only thing we caught during the slack low tide was a few new scratches in his gelcoat. On the bright side, we marked a new rock pile.
