Keaton Bch 4/27 - 4/28

Post by Atljad »

Went with a big group (7 guys/3 boats) for the weekend.

Got in the water around 2:00 pm on Friday (man, it was windy and rough). Fishing was pretty solid...lots of fish variety (smacks, ladies, cats, pilot fish, blues, etc). One of our boats limited out easily, the other two did pretty well (6-8) keepers each. The fish were scattered as one of our boats caught 'em in 2.5ft and my boat was in 6ft. The absolute highlight of my trip was catching a 3+ foot "Houndfish." I had never even heard of this fish before (had to ask a local guide). As big as he was he was a fight, but since I side-hooked him, he really gave me my money's worth. Most caught on ct/gulp with a few on susp. plugs.

Saturday, we went out around 8:30 am or so...beautiful weather. The fishing wasn't hot, but it was steady. All 3 boats limited out (although we fished almost all day) and for some of the guys it was their "best trip ever." Again the fish were scattered btwn 1.5ft and 7 ft of water....the variety was limited on Saturday...mostly just small trout. My boat actually caught 19 keepers, a s-mack and a few ladies. It wasn't fantastic, but you can't argue with your whole posse limiting out!

Spanish?

Post by Atljad »

No, there was no real pattern to the spanish other than they were all in 6ft of water and caught them all (4) on twich baits. They were all pretty small...

I think that I had a huge houndfish hook up at Econfina Saturday. It was a long way from the boat, but I set the hook on "something", I had it foul hooked and it started jumping like crazy, looked to be 3 or 4 feet long. The hook pulled after about 10 secs. I thought it might be a gigantic lady fish, but the more I think about it, I think it was probably one of those "sea monsters" :o

Yeah, the houndfish was the highlight of my trip. B/c I didn't know what it was, I wasn't sure whether I could keep it or not....I took a couple pics of it, so I look forward to getting those developed (took a disposable camera). I was glad I side-hooked that bad boy, b/c I didn't want to touch his mouf! :o
