Aucilla 5-12: A good ol' big'un and a big ol' good'un

Post by caseycook »

Got up at 5 this morning, had the boat ready, only to find out one of the guys I was supposed to go with decided it was cooler to get drunk last night than fish this morning...so me and pops headed to the Aucilla by ourselves. We were the 2nd truck in the parking lot, got the boat in and idled out around the Sulphur Creek area. We wanted to fish a new area so we stopped the boat after idling a couple miles and immediatly had success. Within five minutes, the first Red was in the boat. Two casts later, Pops caught one that went in the livewell also. Stayed on this spot and caught 12 reds, all on topwater. Exciting. At one point, I made a cast and had an absolute explosion on my topwater lure...and hooked up. The fish proceeded to take out line and within about a minute had about 75 yards out. I fought the fish for a good 7 minutes and got her to the boat. 31" redfish (a new career best). Very niiiice. We drifted along catching redfish and trout for another hour or so. Around 9:00, we were drifting through an area with some good looking patchy bottom. I was walking the dog and there was a big explosion on the topwater...a monster trout. Fought the fish for three or four minutes and got her to the boat. She was a monster, 28" long and fat (another career best). I'm guessing she weighed at least 6 lbs. After a few pics, we got her back in the water and she swam off to fight another day.

Caught a few more redfish and trout on topwater, but the bite turned off around 11...fished for another hour or so and took it to the house. We had our limits of trout and redfish. It was a great day on the water with the guy that introduced me to the sport. You can't beat that.

We stayed in close to the grass, fished in less than 2.5' of water, and caught all our fish on gold topwater lures. The water temp stayed between 75-79 degrees all day.

Fine looking fish Casey. Ain't it great to get to fish with your dad. Lots of folks would love to be in your shoes. Myself included.

It's ok. I had fun getting drunk chasing fat girls around AJ's. Gotta go hoggin every once in awhile. Glad you and Chucktown had a good time. Those are some real nice fish you guys caught. Next time I'll leave the heavy hitters alone and keep my priorities straight! :smt012
