Sabikis

Post by RedMann »

Okay, I know most folks are just gonna say to throw 'em away but is there any reasonably easy way to keep and re-use a sabiki rig? The infernal things always find a way to hook me more than the bait whenever I use them but I hate to just toss 'em after every trip especially some of those expensive Japanese rigs. Thanks.

There are special rods that retract the rigs into the blank, expensive but you could probably make up the difference after about 100 rigs.

Yeh, I've seen those rigs but I'm reluctant to invest the $$ in one.

The inside of old bream busters work real good.
Save the rubber stopper an hook the last hook on the lip of the fiberglass and wedge the stopper in tight.
If you've lost the rubber stopper an old fashioned cork plug or some duct tape will secure the rig.
Store vertically with the weight at the bottom if possible.
It's a small world, unless you had to paint it.

The secret with sabikis (feathers), is to make your own.

The ultra light line on the shop bought ones, makes them tangle easy.
You do not need that light a line.
We use home made ones all the time for catching bait fish.

The main trace line is between 10 - 15lb mono.
The hook links are 6 - 10lb mono.
Use size 10, 12 or 14 hooks.
Attatch the hook links ( about 4" long) to the main trace using a water knot, or other suitable knot.
4 to 6 hooks a rig maximum.
You can whip small white feathers or tape to the hooks as "lures", or just bait them with small pieces of squid.

Cheap to make and very effective.
Experiment with the options above and find a setup that suits you.
Good fun on a rainy day.

I was at wal-mart in Tally (the one on Apalachee) and they had them. I think they were alot cheaper than the one I got from Bass Pro. Mine works really really well. It is one of the best things I have purchased for the boat.

Jumper -- how much was that rod at Wallyworld?

By the way, my last trip I brought small a piece of cardboard with slits cut in the top/bottom -- wrapped the sabiki on it and tossed it in a plastic baggie. Seems to work okay but just throwing them away or using the sabiki rod is probably the most hassle-free way to go.
Maybe when I'm "retarred" like Cranfield, I'll have time to make my own sabikis.

Dont quote me on this, but I thougt is was around $60. A pretty big investment, but once you try it you will wonder what took you so long.

Make using sabikis as easy as using any other bait. In fact I found myself just picking the thing up once in a while so I could feel a fish pull on the other end while things were slow.

Hope this all helps.

I can tell you 1st hand, i like the sabaki rods from bass pro for $ 70.00 each, i have 2 and think they are awsome, no tangles, ready any time of day you see or need bait. when your finished just put em up. me and my partner caught 3 to 4 pinfish at a time with a small piece of squid on them, so in about 15 minutes had a live well full instead of 45 minutes , 1 at a time, so if you think they are to expensive , how much is your time worth, 30 or 45 minutes more fishing time to me is worth a lot. the same day we caught blue runners offshore from bait pods without changing or rigging anything. the up front expense would scare me if you were going to quit fishing sometimes soon but if you plan to fish many more years, so whats a few more dollars, you gotta love it...

SABIKI RODS

Post by DayStar »

You don't happen to have the model number, brand name or something that I can use to find these on the Bass Pro site do you? I put "sabiki rods" into the search engine on their site and got every kind of rod they sell except sabiki rods.

THANX!

"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".

BPS Sabiki Rods

Post by d-tox »

If you can wait they may go on sale again. I bought 2 in last October and paid $59 each with attached reels, line, and shipping!

If you can't wait, you still won't be disappointed. They make using sabikis fun.
