Fishing the gold spoon

Post by Redbelly »

Lord knows I have tried fishing this proven lure, a piece of metal with a hook.

I have never had a bite on one. I have tossed it right in front of waking reds, but no hookup. How do you work this lure? What retrieve gives you succes?

HELP :o

Chunk and wind. Thats all you need to know.

You say you've cast the spoon to waking reds...are you sure the wakes you see are actually created by reds?

a few years ago I was where you are today RB...ask chalk he'll tell you . I hated the spoon. But one day something clicked and it has been on ever since.

I use a 7:1 gear ratio reel on a 7' med./heavy Marshmaster rod. The reel is loaded with Suffix braid 10-20 lb. I use 18" of flouro leader 20 lb.

Other than that it is all chunk and wind. I realize it sounds like a smartass answer, but that is the truth. Chunk and wind is all I do.

It must be tied directly to the line, swivel clips reduce action. Its really a great anything goes weedless bait. I even caught a Sheepshead on one, not to mention Reds, Trout, and Spanish.

On a side note,
This Louisiana game warden had been keeping an eye on the fishing docks, when after about a week he noticed that Boudreaux had been coming back every day with a boat full of fish. One day he starts to talk to Boudreaux as he's pulling his boat in. The warden says,'Boudreaux, I been watchin you. I notice every day dat you been comin' in wid a full load of fish. You must be havin some good luck? Eh?" Boudreaux answers, "May yah, dem fish is easy to catch." The game warden replies, "Well listen. I got me a day off comin next Saturday. I was wondring, maybe I could go an fish wid you?" Boudreaux replies, "May dat be no problem. Jus make shore you be here at dat 6 a.m. sharp. Cause I gonna leave dis dock wid or widout you." "May I'll be here, don't chu worry none about dat" answers the warden.

Saturday comes and the game warden is waiting at the dock when Boudreaux pulls up and puts his boat in the water. The game warden gets in and Boudreaux proceeds to drive the boat out to the middle of the lake. At this point, Boudreaux shuts off the engine and lets the boat glide to a stop. The game warden, who'd been curious anyway, says to Boudreaux, "May Boudreaux, I been lookin aroun dis boat, and I notice dat all you don brought was dis here ice-chest and dat little brown paper bag under your seat. May, you don't even got no fishin pole." Boudreaux answers, "May, dat be because dats all I need" And he proceeds to pull a stick of dynamite out of the brown paper bag, lights it, thows it in the water and watches it go boooom! All the fish in the area, being stunned, float to the top of the water.

The warden, by this time, can't believe his eyes. Half yelling, he says to Boudreaux, "May Boudreaux, I know we been knowin each udder for a long time, but man, you can't be doing dat, especially wid me being a game warden n all. May, dat's agin de law in a big way dat is." Boudreaux, without say a word, calmly reaches down into the bag (with the warden still rattling off), pulls out a stick, lights it, hands it to the warden and says, "You gonna talk, or you gonna fish?"

I have had some success with the spoon, I also like a gold floating rattle trap and the spinner bait.

I have caught more on copper intruders than any other spoon.

I don't believe I have caught one on Captain Mikes or Nemires yet but I have thrown them I got a few on the Johnson.

Of course I have caught them on grubs with and without the cork. Some also on other hard baits top water and suspending.

I have never had the thirty red day on a spoon but have on shrimp tipped jigs.

I have most likely not thrown it enough to deserve to have anymore confidence in it than I do.

That being said I still like them and hope to get to where I lean on them more. I also hope to spend more time where they are needed (on the big pond).
Yesterday it was taboo today it is normal what the heck will they be doing tomorrow?

After reading this post this morning, I made it a point to use the spooners today (definitely not because it was windy and grassy).

I can honestly say that hands down, they were the absolute best lure of the day...

for ladyfish :smt013 big ladyfish...annoying ladyfish that want to poop orange dooky on the boat...but ya know...they're fun to fight. After 5 large ladyfish and quite a few missed ladyfish hookups, I swithced to something else and started pulling in the trout...

I'm not trashing spoons by the way; in the right place and time, someone can wrassle in a gaggle of reds on em; just ask the dawwwwg.

I went out...past the thing, kept going....went straight, went 2 more miles...finally found some 3 foot water. I spent most of the day wrasslin the boat, but did do a little fishing. I'll prolly put up a report here in a few, although it is nothing impressive; spent waaay more time wrasslin the boat than the fish.

I'm pretty sure ladyfish dooky is pink, but that why you treat them the same a snotcats - all handling is done over the water.

I too once thought the gold spoon thing was the wet equivalent of "snipe hunting", but one day I made a commitment at the landing that I would throw the spoon until I caught something. I am now converted. I now believe that if a red is there, it will hit the spoon most of the time. I always have one rod in my quiver tied with a spoon.
