Bull Reds @ Sikes Cut 10-12-07

Post by oyster1 »

Planned this trip for about a week before actually going. We had just gotten the first taste of cool weather, which made me think the bigger bulls would come running through the pass.

Left the folks AP beach house around 6:30am in my dads pursuit, since the winds were forcasted at 17 knots. Pulled the bait traps and they were slam full of pinfish, which was a good first sign. Took about an hour and some change to get to St. Georges.

Got to the pass and anchored, the currents were ripping and it took an 8oz weight to keep the bait down. After fifteen minutes Eric (Squall Line) hooked into the first bull of the day. We didn't get a measurement on this guy, but looks to be around 40in. We didn't weigh any either, because we didn't want to injur the fish with the type of scale we had.

Dad caught 36in and 37in reds and another friend caught about a 36in red shortly thereafter.

I then hooked into this guy. 42in and fat, these guys will put a hurtin' on you on light tackle.

Roomate then caught a red right under 40in.

Dad hooks a 37in.

Day ends with friend and roomate double hook up with two bulls 36in and 38in. After this picture my friend caught the last fish of the day 36in.

Start heading in around 3:00pm in nice weather conditions and some Bud Select. 5 people on the boat 10 reds caught between 36 and 42in all on big live pinfish. Cut bait only seemed to produce cats. Every single one of the fish swam away from the boat unharmed, which is something I was really concerned about. All in all it was an awesome day.

It was fun for sure. Less finesse involved than stalking the flats, but it is something I will try once or twice a year.

On a side note every one on the boat beat their personal best red by at least a foot.
