Spring Warrior Friday

Post by What a mess »

So the water was there one minute and gone the next.

We got there early just after daylight I wanted to be there when the water was.

I was sure creek mouths and topwater would work and stuck with it longer than I should have.

We headed out and started to do better jigs with out the cork for the most part.

Lost a few good fish and caught some shorts along with some trash fish.

There were free boat rides for a few trout and one over twenty a red and a nice black.

The red was the most awesome color it shined in the sun like a new penny, pretty as I ever have seen.

The winds were howling coming from the shore and blew the water out so we had a short trip.

We did okay but not great when we got to the hill the water was dropping quick and I didn't want to spend the night out.

Not earth shatering but a fun quick trip just enough to scratch the itch.

I must say that is all it did was scratch the itch I would love a goodun and if the weather works out I'll try again soon.

Everything worked great, broke / hit nothing and I think other than a jig getting bit off I lost no gear.

Fish on ice boat clean back sore and a Pug in my lap life is good. :smt004

Update I just talked to James at the camp.

Looks like I called it right there are still boats out no water at all in the creek and sundown is in ten minutes.

They will not get any water if it comes in at all for hours. Bad deal we tried to tell them.
Yesterday it was taboo today it is normal what the heck will they be doing tomorrow?

So.. what does one do in this situation? Run up to Keaton? Hang out and wait for water and then attempt to negotiate the river after dark? :o
Seriously, what would you do?

Perchjerker,

In a real emergency (potential over exposure to cold, accident, etc.), the closet place you can get in AND you could easily get help (unless there is an extreme negative tide) is Dekle Beach (to the south). That is, if you are just trying to get to the hill ASAP. Get out and knock on someone's door and I'm sure they would like to help.

If you can get all the way to Keaton, that would be better since there is a working marina/public boat ramp. The ramp at Dekle is not a public one. Also, the channel at Dekle is a pretty good one, just go slow (as you always should in water you haven't traveled much).

Coming from Spring Warrior, Keaton is just about 10 minutes past Dekle (at least it is in my 16' skiff), so if you have the time and gas, Keaton would be the best place.

What I had told the guy with me was if worse came to worse we could run to Keaton if it was to shallow to get in there Steinhatchee, is a river and would surely allow us to get off the water.

If you don't know enough about winds, tides and weather and the effect it has on the place you are fishing then don't makes things worse by trying to go in a place you know nothing about.Ease in as close as you can, throw out the hook and wait on the tide,it will come back and then you wont be miles from your truck and trailer.
