Offshore Dog Island, November 30

Post by EddieJoe »

I heard about the grouper fishing that was going down yesterday and a friend let me know all the happy details. After almost two weeks without wetting a line I decided the "honey dos" could wait, and I would go, weather willing.
NOAA was doing the usual two step, calm one forecast and rough the next. After checking the star chart, two fortune tellers and my astrologers, I said what the heck. The alarm was set for 4:20, but I got up at three and started to monkey around the house, putting on the coffee and setting out some cereal. A final check on the wind and forecast, which said "not great" for today. Well, you won't know unless you go.

Left the house about 4:30 a.m., and pried open the bay door on my boat storage bin in Carrabelle about 6. Wind out of the NE about 5k, and not too cold. Maybe.
Dropped the boat into the basin at Lanark at 7, ready to troll up some biggies, I hoped. Leaving the twin markers at the shoal, I pointed the Oh Hell, Mechele! southeast into the 1' chop, and the seas were really easy, not rough (thank you, Lord!).

To my favorite trolling zone in 45', and plunked the red/white and a fire tiger (friend said fire tiger was good yesterday) into a nice area, but nothing but fouled plugs for an hour. Too much grass and no bites. Stopped at a number, and checked in a drift for bites, lots of nibbles, so anchored up. Started feeding the 21" gags boston macks one after the other. After 7 21" fish, managed one 23" and felt it was time to move.

Motored out to 55', tried the spot on drift, and anchored. Well, this one was better. Missed several on a soft hit, but managed to ice four more fish in an hour: one 26" fire truck, a 28" gag, a 26" gag, and a 23" joined number one. I did get rocked twice, and the bite stopped. Why was I fishing, anyway? I had my five, and time to go. By this time the seas had slicked out, and I began to appreciate how beautiful a day it was. A big loggerhead turtle surfaced near the boat as I hauled in the anchor, numerous dolphins were jumping on the way in, and as usual for this time of year, saw lots of loons diving and swimming.

Tide was dead low, but got in on plane and easily put the boat on the trailer at 11:30, despite the tide. Six trailers in the lot at Lanark. This retirement suits me.

Luck,

EJ

For a "working" man, you get out on the water pretty good, now. :smt005

Great report EJ.

What is this retirement thing you speak of? I think I've got another 40 years or so.
