Another Stein/Keaton report 12/14-15/07

Post by Breambuster »

The initial plan was to go down to Keaton for some trout fishing and to bring the boat home but we change to plan B when learned that TrophyPro was looking for someone to tag along for grouper fishing. We didnt load the boat like last weekend but did end up with 5 grouper and a bucket full of grunts. Thank you Keath (TrophyPro) for being a great host - we had a good time.

We spend from 9 to around noon trolling plugs but only caught one fish but it was a nice one. I got to catch a fish instead of the camera man for a change.

Ddb doing the catch and release thing - he was good at it on this trip.

Calvin the grunt master

Pulling up one and sometime 2 grunts at a time, it didnt take long for Calvin to fill the cooler.

If you though all the adults were the one catching all the grouper, well you are wrong. Calvin not only wear out the grunts, he took high-hooks on the grouper as well. Who need fancy grouper stick with a matching heavy-duty reel, he got it done with a GTI 320 on a 4' 15-30lb rod, 3/0 hook and 30lb test line of course. This is his beeliner rig (see pict #3).

His second grouper, a gag and a nice one.

And a bonus catch - I think it's a jolthead Porgy?

We stayed the night at Keaton and sling cork from 8 am to 1.30 pm and did better than I thought. Of course, Calvin ended up catching the two biggest fish.

what we brought home

Got back to Tifton right before the bottom of the sky fell out - got a free boat wash. Only one grouper came from plugs, two were on live bait and calvin's fish were caught on an itty-bitty piece of squid. All the keeper trout were caught on pinfish although Ddb did caught a bunch of gulp size fish (14.5'') using (what else) gulp shrimp.

Nice couple of days of fishing there Breambuster. Calvin is becoming quite the angler, you need to get him in the jr. angler division for the '08 tournaments.

  Great trip, BB. Looks like you're raising Calvin up right. He's quite a little fisherman. Those are some nice trout. I had 2 friends that went to Econfina Friday and they caught a lot of trout, too.
