Kill switches
This topic was brought up in conversation the other day, and I began to wonder what percentage of folks wear them. A friend was telling me about how several years back, there was a couple that got thrown out on a river, and if another boat had not intervened and hit their boat to stop it circling, they would have been run over. He also said the couple was not going that fast, hit a hidden log floating, and it threw them before they knew what hit them.
The more I know about something, the more I know that I did not know as much as I thought I knew that I knew.

Only when the motors running! Its a good habit to have. Ive got a good friend who only has two toes now because he wasnt wearing one. Its real simple , get in the boat , put on your kill switch, crank your motor. Live to try and catch more fish than BB on tourney day.

I've been thrown out of a boat before, by myself, with no kill switch on the motor. That was fun. Way back in the middle of no where. Mistake in iteself, but I was 18 and immortal at the time. I had to catch the boat and let it drag me while I was reaching over to shut the motor off. (don't ever do that) Count myself luck to be here.
Have a buddy that got thrown out of his boat on the Ocklocknee River and Spent a winter day wet on one of those grass islands before a search party found him. He was just cruising a long and hit something, may have been a gator. He went one way and his boat went the other. No kill switch. Not good.
I always wear mine.

Yea I should wear it but I don't wear my seat belt either.
There are some really neat electronic kill switches coming out that are much less inconvenient. Put on a little wrist band and if you get thrown out the boat stops. That would we great on offshore boats especially at night. Put it on everyone and if someone goes on deck for the call of nature and takes a plunge everyone knows because the engine stops.
They are a little pricey now but soon I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't standard equipment.
Kind of funny about me and the kill switch. I fish often offshore by myself. When I do I wear an auto inflate lifevest and have an epirb in the pocket of the vest. Can't wear that kill switch lanyard because every time I leave the helm I forget and kill the engine.
