Keaton Beach 4/18 - 4/19

Post by Atljad »

Headed down to KB for a nice weekend of fishing. Me and my buddy went out about 1:00 on Friday to fish the afternoon. The afternoon got off to a great start when within 30 minutes of wetting a hook, I hooked up with a nice cobia on a suspending plug. 20 minutes and a sore wrist later, I had my first keeper cobia (35 inches) in 20 years of fishing. Great start. The rest of Friday was full of activity, but the big trout were hiding. Out of 25-30 trout, we only kept 5. It may have been the 15 or more blues that we caught that were keeping the trout at bay. We even had a Lizard fish get cut in 1/2 on the way to the boat. The weather was great, but blues were out in force. :smt009

Saturday was windy and rough, but the fishing was great. This day we were joined by two more buddies in another boat. We went out around 9:30 and by 1:00 we had 15 keepers between the 4 of us (though we threw the 15'-16' back). From 1:00-3:00 the fish shut down completely which was a great time to catch some lunch. Back out at 3:30 for one of the best 3 hour stretches I've seen. In my boat, we caught 15 keeper sized trout from 3:30 - 6:30 with many, many shorts as well. The wind was brutal and a little chilly, but the fishing was hot. It was one of those fortunate days where we could throw back keepers and just enjoy the thrill of catching 'em. By days end, the 4 of us had boated 36 trout of "keeper" size...not to mention the 50-60 shorts. We had a 24', a 21' and two 20's to boot. Oddly enough the blues were basically gone on Saturday. Not a bad way to spend a saturday with a few friends....
