Ruby Lips
As fuel prices rise and limits are decreased, we all face challenges ahead. I believe that other species will begin to be targeted to offset the losses. Myself, I enjoy fresh grunts on occassion and I suspect that I will focus more attention on them.

Re: Ruby Lips
Big ones go in the ice box, small ones get cut and go on a hook. Red grouper love them
You’ve reached middle age when all you exercise is caution.
Re: Ruby Lips
I like to eat them. Use the small ones for bait (often alive on a flatline).
Re: Ruby Lips
I try and eat fish once or twice a week so I need to keep every tasty fish I catch. You can fill up a cooler with them in a hurry even if the grouper are not biting.
Watch out for the one who brings a spoon to a knife fight..he is either really stupid or really good with a spoon. <')))><

Re: Ruby Lips
Well, if they are fried they aren't too bad. I am not sure what a grilled grunt would taste like?

We always bring them back- My Pop would be upset if I didn't
One other upside is that most folks won't fight you for them
Unless you clean them first.....
Another note- While I checked the top box they do not taste like snapper- they taste like Grunts or porgies or black sea bass.
I love trying different fish and seeing how they taste.

Per FWC's ask and answer website: IN STATE WATER - unregulated species (grunts and othes) may be cleaned before landing. Have any of you folks ever had a bad experience with 'The Man' when you had grunt fillets on board?

Re: Ruby Lips
Not about Grunts, but has any one keep and ate 'pogys' I was unable to get anyone at sea hag to identify what these fish were (just gave description only). Caught several about the size of grunts and as near as i can determine there is no size limit/bag limit!
Re: Ruby Lips
They are good as well- there is a small line of bones along the lateral line that need to be trimmed out.
Here is a box of "bonus" fish...

And here is a Pogy from the same trip.

Re: Ruby Lips
I think they are called "white Snapper", but not really a snapper a member of the porgy family. Did they have purple lines around their mouth?
