Grouper fishing with the Flip Video Camera
Had an interesting and exhausting two days off shore. My buddy Tyler entered us in the Capt.Jack tournament out of Alligator Point marina.
The Crew was Tyler, His Dad Odie, Capt Chris and Me.
The tourny included Grouper, King Mackerel and Amber Jack.
Well the fish gods did not see favorably on us...
The first day found us without a boat until after 3pm... a computer panel went out on one of the engines and it took more trouble shooting than initially expected.
We trolled on the way out to an area we knew held amberjack but could not entice a king to bite... every other trip the kings are the easiest target in the water.
When we hit the amberjack hole all we caught were short grouper and hooked up with a few Barracudas... I probably had a big jack on but he broke the line off on a wreck.
The worst part of the trip came as we were returning to port.
The captain was not familiar with the channel and cut between two unmarked pilings running us aground just as the tide was going out....
Four hours later we were pulled off the sandbar by SeaTow... thank you SeaTow membership!!
We got home at 1:30 AM had a quick bite and hit the bed.
The next morning we headed out tired and slap happy on 3 and a half hours of sleep. We planned a long run to a good grouper hole and then trolling back to another ambejack spot. I played bait catcher and loaded up the baitwell while the other guys fished ... We found the grouper and caught some that would have placed but without the King and Amberjack we did not have a chance to win.
We were never able to troll up a king and ran out of time before we could chase the Amberjack.
When we got home the second day there was a crowd of people at the beach house- they all came downstairs and watched me clean grouper.
I kept offering to teach them but they said I could clean 3 in the time it took them to clean one.
I kept the throats, cheeks and backbones for myself - left them the fillets to cook for dinner.
I also brought back a bunch of grunts, porgies and black sea bass for dad... He loves the small ones.
All in all a fun time! I really enjoyed getting to know Tyler's Dad and fishing with Chris is always a pleasure.
But I am worn out! Two days and many hours on the water I can still feel it moving under me.
The worst part- I caught a cold yesterday and it is worse today. Do you feel sorry for me?
Here are a few videos from the trip Friday and Saturday.

The more I know about something, the more I know that I did not know as much as I thought I knew that I knew.
