Mashes Sands 6-3-08
The boss gave me the day off "since our database upgrade has now been postponed" and I took advantage. Left the hill at 6:20 with a brisk breeze from the SSW. Headed towards my close in spot and at about 3 miles out it started getting pretty bumpy, so turn around and troll back towards inshore. had several hits and picked up one Spanish, the wind seemed to be dieing down, so headed back offshore, the same HEAVY chop met me again at 4 miles out but I decided ta just bang it out. Got to my spot in 30 foot and trolled over my structure BAM the clicker goes nuts and I'm sure it's a Cobia, nope, it's a 29" Grouper
troll over the spot twice more and BAM, I'm positive this is a Cobia with the drag burning runs it makes, nope, a 33" Grouper

troll over the spot several more times with no luck and the wind and waves getting worse, so I head in before I really start feeling stupid "which I'm sure the offshore boat that passed me out there thought I was"
ran back in to the flats and picked up one 17" Trout, tried the bars for a Red with no takers, started trolling a Yozuri minnow back towards the landing and BAM, the line starts peeling of the reel and the new MH Ugly Stik is bent over
after 15 minutes of gaining and loosing line, I finally get to see my Cobia is actually a Jack Crevelle "not a Pompano like I had earlier reported"
I've never caught either before and thus had no idea which it was
after that 25 minute tug-a-war, I decided ta head in at 10:30. Unloaded fish and eat a bite and back on the water again "the river with the daughter this time"
the girl had already cut her knee earlier in the day, and I had put the water mellon in the ice chest as well as the knife "with the blade side up"
you guessed it, she reaches in the chest for a drink and puts a pretty good slice in her finger
grab the first aid kit and put two band-aids on it and head for the hill. We did try some fishing before the incident, but the wind had whitecaps on every stretch of river we tried
the offshore temp was 82, inshore was 84 and the river was 84, a good bit of floating grass offshore a visibility was poor at best
