Re: Tarpon! A Big'n @ OB
Nice job with your first tarpon, TT. They are always fun.
A word of warning, however. To pull a fish up into the boat, even if you intend to release it, requires purchase of a $50 tarpon tag. As long as the fish stays in the water you're fine. Removing one can cause internal damage to the organs, which is why the FL Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is strictly enforcing the law. Law enforcement is monitoring sites like BBF to ensure compliance, so on future catches you might want to take your shots of the fish in the water to avoid a fine. Going with a little heavier tackle will also shorten the fight and reduce the stress on the fish.
Not trying to rain on your parade, TT. Just wanted to share some information to keep you and others out of trouble and to ensure the fish have the best chance of survival. There are several good sections on tarpon on the FWC site http://www.myfwc.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, including a new DNA study going on to help track and ID fish. The tagging kits are free and participants are eligible for random prizes.
Again, congrats on your 'poon.
