Hot Saturday at Econfina 7/26/08

Post by Flint River Pirate »

We got into the water on Saturday morning around 7am and headed out about 1/2 mile to catch some bait. It was very hazy, hot and the water was like glass. There was no wind at all and it was completely silent. It was the spookiest feeling to us. :o It just felt weird. We caught penty of bait to start so we headed to a 9ft hole that I have marked. We didn't have a drift so we floated there for about an hour. We caught a few short trout, a 30 inch cobia (that got off right at the boat), a couple of small sharks and a dozen short rock bass. We decided to try deeper water. We headed 10 miles straight out until we found 15-20 feet of water. That was the right decision. We started catching fish out there. I put out a few liive bait rigs, with no luck. We ended up catching a few more cobia and sharks on frozen cigar minnows! It was cool. Also the lizard fish were out like crazy! The deeper water produced 3 trout over 20 inches and 8 more keepers. Also several keeper rock bass. We caught them on "molten" Gulp with a 1/4 oz red headed jig. The magic depth was 15ft. It was the hottest day I have ever had out there. A very fun day because I did get to take one buddy on his very first trip! Low tide was scheduled for 4:30pm but at 2:30pm it was LOW! I bumped rocks the whole way back in. Glad we decided to head back when we did.

Way to get em while its "hot".....

Might want to check which chart you use for tides. Low was at 3:38 pm at .4 ft.....You were lucky you got in with no damage....at 2:30 you were already down to about .5 feet of water, which is below my limit for going in or out....

I think you were using the "mandalay" chart, which is wrong....

Here is the right one....for aucilla and econfina....

You're right about the weather saturday, it was strange out there. It's hard to drift when you're just bobbing out there. Glad to hear you found the magic depth; we never found it.

We didn't have any problem coming back in, but a boat next to us smashed into a rock 20 feet from the landing. The guy on the bow just about took a swim. I typically use saltwatertides.com which tends to be right on. It said low at 3:30 and at 1:00, it was low.

I wondered what the rich people do while the poor have to work. Looks like they bring home dinner too!!! When's the fish fry? Your a quick learner, maybe you could teach my boss a thing or two.
