Wading up the Flint

Post by GAJOEY »

My son and I waded up the flint river Sunday trying to catch a few shoal bass .We waded about 1 mile up the river form the HWY 32 bridge caught a few dinks in some rocks and trees.we spent about 3 hrs throwing trick worms and spinnerbaits caught 6 throwback shoal bass bout 10 inches or so .I caught one of Bad Behavior's nasty bastid blackfish which was not fun being we were in about 5 ft of water I really did not want to put my hands on it so I shook him off my line in a somewhat well executed manuver. Then I hooked a 3 to 4 ft copperhead which was the biggest one I have seen in a while, luckly he got off .But he did not go away he kept stalking me and came within a foot of me so we decided to let him have the whole river. They sure aren't skittish like cottonmouths...

On a side note It was heart breaking to hear about the two people that drowned on the Flint Sunday.I just hope all of you guys are careful on your fishing and swimming trips it only takes a split second to get into trouble out there..

There is nothing like wading the Flint!  That was a horrible tragedy with the two people drowning Sunday, may God be with the families.

About how far from Tallahassee is this place on the Flint? I was thinking about taking my Native watercraft up that way and catching a few shoalies on the fly.

Is it possible to paddle upriver from the location you put in at or is the water moving too quickly?

jmlockwood you could put in at Vada with your rig and paddle. It is fairly shallow and has some deep holes, and shoalies.

From Tally I guess you would have 1.5 hr drive at the most. Look on a map, it's where the county line road between mitchell/grady counties ends at the flint.

One of the prettiest sections of the river to me is around the hwy 32 bridge at the Worth-Lee county line, both north and south. Crossed it this past week and shoals far as you can see both ways.. water was real low.

I've fished it but been many years ago...There is a ramp of sorts at the bridge but again its been a long time since I put in there..One thing, the river along there used to be full of gator fleas. Many years ago cousin and I would go out there with a piece of screen wire and fill a bucket with them. just lift a flat rock and they'd wash into the screen wire..Caught bass, bream and a lot of channel cat on hellgramites...

The bridge is about 10miles east of Leesburg. Probably two good hours plus from Tallahassee...

no need for a ramp or boat for that matter the water was less than 1 ft across the whole river in several spots.
