Keaton Beach 8/9 - 8/10

Post by Ron Wilson »

Son (Ronnie) was down from college. Original plan was all guys (me, my buddy, both sons), but that didn't work out, so my daughter (Britani) jumped at the chance to go. Me, my son and daughter head to Keaton Beach late Friday afternoon. Arrive at the camper and walk into an invasion of mosquitos. It was bad, and I mean bad (and I'm originally from Fl). While me and Ronnie got gear prepped for the next morning, Britani made us a meal of blackened chicken and tortellini (sp?).

Early start in the next morning. Had early hook ups with reds...Ronnie and Brit tied into a double. Ronnie brought his first ever red to the boat (little over 18"). Brit's had some shoulders and looked like a nice one.....then broke off :( . Ronnie picked up a slot trout, then nothing much after that. Promised some scallops, so we spend the next couple hours in the water. Limited out then decided to head to deeper water to try for some trout...one more keeper then to the house. We get back to the camper and the kids begin cleaning scallops while I visit a guy from work who has a place nearby. I get back an hour + later and they were done. Clean up, get some more dinner, then off to bed.

Ronnie and I get up for some more early morning fishing. It was glass on the water. Got in shallow and I no sooner get on the trolling motor and see bait scatter and a fin rise and roll (about 4-5' fish). :o grab the first pole I see and toss a shallow running mirror lure at what I'm pretty sure is a tarpon. Fish turns, rolls on the lure and I set the hook. Goes tight for a minute then slack....no more lure or fish. :-? Had bait everywhere and a few explosions, but we never hooked up. Saw one more, what I think was a tarpon, going hard after bait a short distance off. Had to get going, so we packed it in, cleaned up the camp and headed home.

Day One, still dark.

Day two sunrise. Pretty neat color and formation of clouds around the sun, but not a great picture.

If they finished your scallops in an hour I may want to hire em. I would have liked to have chased some reds, but by the time we hit the water the near-shore areas were pretty well coverd up by scallopers.
