Carrabelle 10-1-08

Post by dolphinatic »

I had a client call me at 7:30pm Tuesday evening and tell that he wanted to take me fishing on his day off with his boss. I told him that I had plenty to do here in town, but he convinced me that I needed to go  I think he just wanted some good numbers
We stopped by Hopkin's place in Lanark to load up on live pinfish and LY's. Got down to Carrabelle around 8:00am and headed out. We got out around Dog Island and were greeted by nice 1-2's. Looked like the makings for a nice day
Got to the first spot in 45 ft. and sent down some pinfish. My first hit of the day, broke me off!!!! It was a nice fish that I never turned out of the structure. Immediately, the red snapper starting hitting right when the bait got to the bottom. We kept sending down the pins when finally Bobby had a nice fish slam his bait.......after finally turning the fish out of the rocks he got 'em up......a nice 32" gag!

We were going through the pinfish so fast, that we decided to switch over to LY's and squid. The grouper starting hitting the LY's nice but we had alot of 20-21" that had to go back. If we cut the squid, we only managed grunts. If we used a whole squid, we caught grouper. So, we used whole squid  We caught fish consistently, but decided to move when we started catching only shorts.
We moved out to another spot in 65 ft. and started the same procedure all over again. We managed a few nice grouper with LY's here. Pinfish action was slower only producing short grouper. I decided to have a little fun, so I rigged up my Calcutta 200 with the smallest of the pinfish in the livewell. Try pulling up a 10 lb. grouper from 65 ft. with 20 lb. mono on a 7 ft. medium action Challenger rod.....it's a blast!!!! After I got broke off for the 3rd time, I abandoned this set up  We stayed till around 2:30pm and then decided to call it a day.
The seas never got over 2 ft. and it was an absolutely beautiful day on the water. Visibility was about 10-12 feet down. Fish bit well all day.
Got a picture of Birddog's boat from a post the other day on the way back in when the camera decided to start working again. That's why we only had the 1 picture

Can't beat those beautiful days, with days like that catching fish is just a bonus. Congrats on the catch!
