Fly leaders

Post by sundown »

Tying up some homemade leaders for this weekend. For many years all I ever used was about 5' 10lb monofilament..worked good with rubber spiders and poppers for brim. Hopefully this weekend gonna go out in Tampa bay with a guide so trying to take something more professional. Guide will furnish rods and flys but I want to use my own equipment including some of these flys I've tied myself..

So far what I've come up with is a butt section of 30# Seaguar 5' long, 3' 17# Seguar and a 3' section of 12# Seaguar. Tied with a perfection loop on the butt section with the two other sections joined with a blood knot. Makes a length of 11' which is a lot for a 9' rod..at least for me...

Wondering what some of you fly fishers with a lot more experience than me use....

I use this formula http://www.redchaser.com/basicleaderconstruction.htm

I would use a double surgeon's loop at the butt section...I only use a perfection at the tippet to fly
