Trailer Re-Wire Question w/pics

Post by Rainman »

I bought the submersible trailer re-wire kit from West Marine today. I found that my old light housing has three wires running out of it. A green, brown, and white for the ground on one and the brown, yellow, and white on the other. The new light housing only has the green and black on one side and yellow and brown on the other, with no ground. Did I buy the wrong kit somehow? I ran the short ground wire at the top of the trailer. If I hook up the new lights they do not work. I hook up my old lights and they work. The old light is grounded to the trailer with a bolt. But the new one doesn't give the option to ground. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This picture shows one of the old light housing next to the new. The old has a ground wire. Why not the new one?

I opened up the new housing, am I suppose to connect and run my own ground?

Did you actually bolt the new lights to the trailer? and was it hooked to the truck ? Lights should be grounded to the trailer through the bolts that hold the light on the trailer.

Ok, I think i see. The trailer was connected to the truck but the lights were not bolted to the trailer yet, I was just testing out. So the new lights, which lack a ground wire, make the ground connection via the bolts when attached to the trailer? I'll give this a shot tomorrow.
Thank you. Might be able to get a few hours fishing in tomorrow.

Rainman, that should work. I just replaced mine a few months ago.
