St. Marks - Fri, Sat, and Sun

Post by Will_Fish_4_Food »

Fri - Cold...it had just started warming up. Shrimp were ineffective because of pinfish constantly stealing them, maybe more so because the trout didn't seem to want them. Chicken bone SA seemed to be the ticket. We only managed 3 keeper trout after trying the bars at the river mouth, and east flats to Stoney Bayou. Not a very good day. the only highlight was right past the first white stake at the RG I drove the boat into a large school of jack crevalle maybe 20 all very big, and taggin along behind them a fat boy cobia. Threw the jig I had prepared and basically it was too heavy for 2 feet of water....no luck it sunk and I couldn't effectively retrieve it. They were pretty much gone when I spooked them anyway.

Sat - Warming up a bit the bite was much better. Tried for reds first on the bars at the river mouth, and all I caught were a couple lady fish and a nice trout. Went to the west flats out where the stake line starts and caught 3 keeper trout, a couple spanish, and some blues just drifting. Shrimp were working ok, but again Chicken Bone was better. Went back to the east and caught 3 more keepers, but barely. Caught a few pinfish and the spanish were loving them kept 3. I did manage to get stuck going the inside way back to the lighthouse, had to walk it out a ways.

Sun - Got to St. Marks by 6am. Waited for a little light and launched. Headed to the east flats. Shrimp - Bam, bam, couldn't keep my equalizer above water. Kept 4 trout to 23". Also kept a few spanish, caught on jigs. Had to catch a plane to dallas at 3pm so I only got to fish till about 11am.

Bottom line: Clear water! Grassy bottom not just algae looking stuff. Early AM and mid day 3.5 ft was the most productive. Late afternoon 2 - 2.5 was great. Lots of little trout, and spanish good luck. Big pinfish available for catching also.

Will_Fish_4_Food from dallas, tx....can't wait to get back for next weekend.
