So if OFF TOPIC is done away with these MIA contributors should return and that will maintain the popularity of the forum?Chalk wrote:If you all will take a minute to stroll over to Off Topic and then scroll to the bottom and sort Off Topic by replies - descending. You will notice OT first page has 218 to 42 replies on the first sorted page. You may also note the topics of discussions in Off Topic. Now stroll back over to Inshore Fishing reports or any other sub forum and sort the same. For Inshore fishing the first page tally is 71 to 34 - also note the authors that are MIA. Now think back to the information you saw earlier in Off Topic. Then think back to when I was asking everyone to reframe from politics and other crap that wasn't really part of a fishing website. What was I told - its Off Topic and we can talk about what we want too - I said fine - you guys have at it. Now think back to the authors that are MIA - they left because of the Off Topic BS....this is not my opinion - this is the words spoken from their mouths. No embellishment on my part - the gospel as it has been told to me by several of the MIA contributors.

Re: Lot of views, not many posts
Some people used to come here because there was at one time no politics, no tea parties and like topics...they came here because that was absent. Unlike other unnamed forums this was a place to talk about fishing and boats. Point being is that someone on this topic asked about MIA contributors to the site. They left because the consensus wanted Off Topic....majority rules...that is all. Just passing what was told to me.RHTFISH wrote:So if OFF TOPIC is done away with these MIA contributors should return and that will maintain the popularity of the forum?

Thanks Chalk, sorry this went the way it did, I was just tryin to convinve former lurkers like me to post, not to critique past or present posters. Again, the context of boards makes it hard to unnerstand what someone means.

Re: Lot of views, not many posts
Chalk, the "tea party" reference sure seems a bit weak... other than one very active single thread in April 2009 (and yeah, I'm to blame
) hardly any references regarding it... just saying.
And don't understand the sad board-suicide mentality either with folks purposefully holding out sharing fishing reports. Winter's have always been weak as relates to fishing posts, with everyone looking forward to spring/summer fishing reports. No better way to get the board back on track than post fishing reports.
And I'm not even sure I'm buying the whole "MIA authors" thing, anyhow... May be off a few numbers, but you're at about 375 posts this year, Tin Can's almost at 250, Barhopr at about 150, Suber at about 135, Keels around 100, and Casey close to 90. This said, funniest thing of all is that looking at post histories, a few folks in that list are shown to have "off topic" as their most active forum.

I have four other sites of my own to post on too, but I keep checking in on this board too.

I've been on here a while now and I think OFF TOPIC has always been here....just wondering what its purpose was meant to be initially?Chalk wrote:Some people used to come here because there was at one time no politics, no tea parties and like topics...they came here because that was absent. Frankly, the OFF TOPIC area gives a lot of perspective about forum members, especially their values ...including family, spiritual, political, friendships, fellowships, age

No one could tease him, accuse him of fishing JT's holes, or share their tea party exploits and beliefs. Jokes would be totally out of place. Methinks Johnny would tire of the effort(s) to focus...focus...focus on only fishing quickly.

Re: Lot of views, not many posts
Let's be frank. No one is holding a gun to anyone's head demanding that they read Off Topic posts on politics, religion, jokes, etc.
At the same time, I suspect the MIA members who used to post detailed reports only to find lurkers, newbies or the terminally lazy on their spots the next time they went out has nothing at all with them not posting anymore or infrequently.
Having been in the biz professionally for 20+ years, I'll be the last to knock sharing information. But part of the joy of fishing is getting out, exploring and learning things on your own. At least, it is for me.

Sorry if you think my comments are weak BBG - its what I was told, can't speak for other folks, but I can surely tell you what I have been told.
The metrics were for referencing the number of comments related to off topic to a specific topic.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion as well as the others and they didn't like the way things were going and left. No fault to anyone - some like Rocky Road and some like vanilla ice cream....that's why we are all individuals.RHTFISH wrote: I've been on here a while now and I think OFF TOPIC has always been here....just wondering what its purpose was meant to be initially?

I can talk fishing all day long...you wanna talk about politics and I will fall asleep in five minutes

What happened to the Obama administration's main talking point re: the oil spill...."WE"VE BEEN ON IT SINCE DAY ONE"?Chalk wrote:

Oooops.....good night Chalk!

Seriously, how man MIAs are we talking about? I can think of a handfull of folks that can always make up a quorum...or a hell of a
substitute for one!

I have met several people who claim our OFF TOPIC section as their major news source!

Re: Lot of views, not many posts
Let me clarify, Chalk... honestly not trying to insult you but want to point out the truth that there have been very little references to "tea party" activity on this board. Why reference what others say when the facts can be verified in seconds using the search tool that you likely know how to use as well as anyone on the board? Politics in general been discussed a-plenty, but the "tea party" specifically -- hardly at all. Do the search, you'll see I speak the truth. One post in April 2009, and hardly any since. Just saying that that one single fish won't swim.Chalk wrote:Sorry if you think my comments are weak BBG - its what I was told, can't speak for other folks, but I can surely tell you what I have been told.

And think I would be relieved if you locked this post... got work to do to pay for the oil spill tax increase Congress is eyeing.

You all ran off "Tennessee" or at least made him change his screen name to "Jump Trout" due to the political crap.
