New Fisherman's bad luck initiation period?
Ok so I'm curious, is there some sort of initiation period for new fisherman where no matter what you just can't catch fish? I'm thinking it is some kind of tester period where you have to prove you're willing to keep trying before the sea will give up its bounty. I RARELY had a chance to fish growing up, and now as a 26 y/o am trying to jump back into fishing as a hobby. However, in the past 3 weekends I have gone fishing 3 times, each trip in my friends' "favorite spots" and have gotten 2 nibbles collectively- not even a serious bite! I have studied this site and pestered my friends to build my tacklebox with the redfish/trout essentials and have caught ZILCH! So any tips on how long this initiation period will last or what I can do to shorten its duration? Thanks...

Many a moon ago, a friend got me into duck hunting. He taught me a lot about duck hunting in general and a lot about where we hunted. Only after ventruing out on my own did I realize that almost everything he taught me was wrong. I wonder how I ever killed any ducks with him! Get friends with better spots!
Just kidding ya of course. Welcome and some days you will know everything and some days you will feel as dumb as can be. Welcome to fishing.

Ducks, turkeys, flats fishing. Who has time for golf?

Like Wevans said, come to a meeting and ask some questions, talk to some people. We're good folks and don't mind helping others.
As far as initiation goes, bust the foot or tear up a prop and you've joined the brotherhood.

What he said. When I fish a new place I like to find someone who has been there a long time fishing it to go out with. If nothing else, hire a guide for a day. You'll learn more in a day with a guide or experienced fisherman than you will a in a year learning by the school of hard knocks.wevans wrote:Go to the next NFGFC meeting and talk to the folks you meet there, I sure one or two of them would be willing to either take you fishin or go fishin with you and help ya out![]()

Fish swim in schools and so do fishermen.

That sounds like some pretty good advice from "getting friends with better spots" to going to the club meeting. I checked the NFGFC website and see the next meeting is July 1st at Beef O'Bradys, but which Beefs is it? I do a lot of travelling for work but am going to do my best to make it to that meeting. Thanks for the tips guys!
