No offense redbelly but an anonymous blog that claims that a fish kill in Jax. is tied to the gulf oil spill is too much like a "my brother in law said" :-?

No offense taken. It seems those articles are quoted from newspapers. I haven't searched to check the authenticity.

Really, I just wanted to know if they were testing the local waters. ScoopSea answered that for me.

If you those links deleted from the thread I will do so.

The article from the "Financial Post", if accurate, really upsets me. If we can get 90+% of the oil off the water with a Dutch skimmer I think that is a whole lot better than 0% because the EPA says so. All of this help that is being turned away is ridiculous. While folks are sitting around trying to figure out what to do, our coastlines are being severely affected.

The One refusing help from other countries was the topic behind my last post in scoop sea's thread. There is a federal law called the Jones Act that prohibits ships that will be operating in, rather than just transitioning through federal waters, that requires that they have US union crews. That law can be waived in times of crisis. So far, Obama has not chosen to waive that law and has refused help from other countries.

I can't believe scoop sea don't know who Andy Stern is. Andy Stern is the former head of the 2.2 million-member Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the fastest-growing union in the Americas. SEIU is the second largest union in the United States and Canada after the National Education Association. It is reported that Andy Stern is one of the most frequent visitors to meet with the Obama and his staff that is not actually on Obama' staff.

I have been reading all of these posts and the theme of Obama turning down foreign help keeps coming up. I have found it very difficult to believe that any president, democrat or republican, would turn down valueable help unless there was a good reason to do so. So I did a little research, took about 2 mins....

This is what I found. After reading some of you may have a lot less to biotch about so I do apologize. :-D

Hey Capt.
This is a simplified version of my understanding of how it has to work under US law/EPA regs...correct me if I'm wrong. Oil/water mixture is skimmed; it must be stored aboard ship and transferred to shore based facility for oil/water separation; the oil then, in some cases, needs to be shipped to another location for refining.
The factcheck article you posted actually confirms my point about foreign ships operating port to port within the US
The port to port shipping is where the Jones act comes into play. I think the article is correct about the ships that are working offshore that don't have to come to port and ship product from one port to another. The Dutch ships seem to be able to handle much more volume than anything we have available that flies a US flag, and even though the ship can not meet the EPA requirements as stated in the article It's my opinion that in a time of crisis a little leeway is called for on some of the regs. If we need to open the ports to any available ship that can haul oil/water to and between ports to handle the volume then so be it. We aren't talking about a foreign owned company coming in and under cutting shipping prices to haul Toyotas from California to Jax. and putting American owned companies out of business....this situation is a little different.
The issue that some of the offers made by other countries are not for aid(free) but rather for hire(profit) is a non issue in my eyes. So what if it's not free, nothing really is anyway. I hate to get to political on this but this admin. doesn't seem to have a problem with spending billions on creating not private sector jobs but gov. jobs and programs, bailing out undeserving banks but, talk about paying another country for equipment and expertise that can help this situation and they push back from the table and cry "Foul" and saying it cost to much. Spending money hasn't seemed to bother them up to this point and in my opinion it's one of the issues that need it most.

Barhopr,

That is my understanding as well as far as processing goes. Now this is just speculation; If we were to open any port to vessels of assistance wouldn't this create a window of oportunity for a terrorist attack? My fiance brought that thought to my attention last night and I haven't heard any concerns of this as of now. I want this thing cleaned up and under control just as much as the next guy, I am just trying to wrap my brain around why things are being done the way they are without initially posting blame. The inner workings of govt. and BP are surely not completely transparent and for a reason. I am just trying to read between the lines as the truth ususally lies there.

I'm sorry but if you think that not allowing for hire vessels in to help with the clean up (paid or free) is keeping terrorists out, then my friend (and I do mean that) you need to take off the rose colored glasses and go by any international airport and check out our "first line of defense". They ain't no Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, I promise.

Obama has blamed BP and they do deserve some blame but they're not the only ones. Enviros that want to limit mine and your access and ability to fish pushed for the legislation that put those rigs that far out. They wanted to protect the enviroment, which is a great idea, but can they wrap their minds around working on something 5000' feet below the surface of sea? I seriously doubt they can.

The inner working of our goverment should be transparent. Hell, ya boy said he was going to make it transparent but all he's done is further muddy the water.

Hey MudDucker: Seriously, I have no idea who Andy Stern is at all, other than what you just wrote. You've got to remember, I'm from North Florida, own guns, used to chew (finally gave it up), like to fish/hunt, believe in property rights, don't care for government that doesn't help, don't give a dang for welfare, don't believe in unions (except between a man and a woman), go to Church darn near every Sunday, pay my taxes, and put myself through college by serving in the military. My point being: Although I work for a Governmental Agency (as an emergency responder, not a regulatory bureaucratic employee) that some folks don't care for, it don't mean all of the employees are bad. I'm just saying, I haven't lied about this topic yet and don't plan to anytime soon. As for the EPA needing to give a waiver for the contaminated water being placed back into the ocean, I sure as heck hope they aren’t holding up this ship for that. I strongly suspect that there is something else holding this up that precludes the EPA needing to make that decision. If they don’t agree to put contaminated water, which is way less contaminated than it was before it went into the ship, back into the other contaminated water, the Agency should be disbanded (minus the emergency response personnel) ;-) . That’s just my two cents. Ya’ll rock on and give em hell.
