Has anyone ever caught a cobia on fly

Post by Coastal Angler Mag »

I will be in C-bell this weekend and would like to try a cobia on fly, looking to see if anyone here has had any luck and if so what type of fly should I use.

Haven't caught one on fly myself, but my buddy sharkman broke a nice 8 weight rod trying.

The easiest way to hook one on fly is to have a buddy on board catching one on reel and to present the fly to one hanging with the cobe on the hook. I would say about 70% of the time we have at least one show up along with one we have hooked.

As for type of fly, large and colorful. Like these...

I thought I was pretty fly after I caught my first cobia.

Very Definitely! I have caught cobia up to 15 lbs on a fly. I usually sight fish then cast to the fish. I blind cast if utterly bored.

I did catch a 38lber with my peewee surf rod which is a 12 foot crappie pole spiral wrapped with a Ryobi VMag3 reel with 6 lb test on it. It hit a 1/8 ounce Pompano jig for some reason. The long parabolic blank landed the fish but my elbows were numb afterwards. JMHO C2

They catch them on the fly over here - but it's considered taboo - with the short window in which they cruise the beach.

probably have better luck catching one on fly in May than February. They cruise the beaches and are often spotted in the spring. Any around now would probably be caught bottom bumping for grouper.

I've had good success catching them on my 9wt. using a 7 inch black eel like pattern. It’s seems to work better it you spray a little Gulp juice. When I first started targeting them they would just follow the fly and only eat it about 10 to 20 percent of the time. After spraying the fly with the shrimp flavor gulp that comes in the bottle I increased my hookups to about 50% of the time.

And bonking them on the head repeatedly with 3-ounce jigs or a balled-up eel is OK?

I used to chase 'em when I lived in Pensacola. Yes, they are anal. But I still give us 'poon pursuers the edge when it comes to fanaticism! :smt005
