Red Snapper June 1

Post by Jobu »

Tuesday night, I told the wife I would be getting up at the butt crack of dawn on Wednesday to throw a topwater plug. She asked why don't we go look for some red snapper instead. So I quickly put the Stradic away and started getting the 4/0 Penns out. Wasn't gonna be an early start cause she don't get up early on vacation. So finally headed south in the Jobu around 11:00. A little choppy on the way out so had to run around 20 mph out to get on station around 12:15. For a 20 ft bay boat, she handles it well. Tried to avoid anchoring by drifting, but no go. Drift was just too fast. So anchor it is. First attempt was just off the spot, so try again. Bottom looks good. Line down. Bam! 20 1/2" red snapper in the boat. Get it unhooked and in the ice chest and drop another bait when the wife grunts. She fights it to the top and land a 22 1/2" red snapper. It looks like it's gonna be a good day. Over the next 2 hours we pull about 20 more fish off of that hole. Unfortunately, no more snapper. At the end of the day brought home 2 red snapper, 3 red grouper and 5 black sea bass. Sea's were calmer on the ride in and the 115 Yamaha pushed the Jubu at 30 mph to get us back in an hour. Cleaned the boat. Cleaned the fish. Then had red snapper on the grill for dinner. Can't post pics on my IPad so they will come later. Hope the rest of snapper season is as good as opening day.

How deep were you fishing and what baits? I'm going to be in Panama City next week and wanted to try and find some red snapper as well. Any tackle info would be helpful. Sinker size/leader/hook size/rigging. I've done some offshore bottom fishing, but not much at P.C. I've got a 175 Scout Sportfisher with a 100 hp Yamaha 4-stroke and will probably be fishing out of St. Andrews' Bay in some spots I've found on the online maps. They look to be 6-7 miles offshore. Thanks for the help. Coach

Way to catch'em up! :smt023
The roar of the engine, the morning air blowing on your face, the darkness is broken as the sun rises above the water revealing the silhouette of a lone bird in the water..........in front of the boat........standing.
