Econfina--A Bust---June 11

Headed out about 0730 in a moderate wind from the SW. Tried about 1 mile out from the tripod...zip...zip . Over toward Aucilla..near shore got a few shorts on CT/jigs. On out to3-4-5 feet of water and got the only keeper trout of the day...four from just keepers to 17-18 in. Got them on CT/different jigs, mainly red/white curlytails. Got one on a pin fish.
The mystery continues....no food what-so-ever in their bellies.
Quit about 3PM
Reb was there also....got 2 sharks and 1 keeper trout. He fished much further out than we did....7-8- feet.

WE HAD ABOUT THE SAME LUCK TUES. AT ST. MARKS. UNTIL IT IS 2 DAYS AFTER THE NEW MOON YOU MIGHT AS WELL BOAT RIDE AND DRAG A SPOON OR TWO , MIGHT GET A FEW SPANISH.

Can you say a little more about that moon issue? When do you find that fishing is slow on the moon cycle? And best? Inshore and offshore the same?

EDDIE JOE, I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND THAT THE FISHING IS BEST FROM 2 DAYS AFTER THE NEW MOON UNTIL SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE THE FULL MOON FOR SALT WATER. AFTER THE MOON FULLS IT IS GENERALLY SLOW FISHING EITHER IN THE DAYTIME OR BY MOONLITE. THERE ARE A FEW EXCEPTIONS TO THIS.
IN FRESH WATER I FISH ANY NIGHT THE MOON SHINES WITH FAIRLY GOOD RESULTS, MAINLY WHEN THE MOON IS DIRECTLY OVER HEAD , WHEN THE MOON RISES AND WHEN THE MOON SETS. HOPES THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION.,

I've got a journal I have kept since 1964 concerning my fishing. I have been fishing saltwater on the Gulf coast for over 30 years and the quarter moons are undoubtly the poorest time of the month to go fishing. Now I go when I get the chance...but when it's on the quarter moon....like Friday...fishing is usually the pits with me.....and my journal backs this up.
I agree....3-4 days before the full moon...or new moon....seems to give the best results.
There exceptions to every rule...and sometimes....I have good luck on these quarter moons....but not very often.

I know we have to go when we can, but get one of these & go by it as much as possible fishing & hunting. You will see a difference.

I like quarter moons, some water movement, but it's not ripping like around the full & new moons. I go by tides mainly, weather and when I can.

Weather is a big factor now, it's hot, so fish early and late or go deep....Part of the game is figuring them out

Nice report, and thread. Only I wouldn't title your report as if it was a "bust!" You must not' ve been scunked in a while! Maybe if I can learn a little more from great threads like you find on here, I won't be either!

It all changes daily, but I like quarter moon this time of year. You bout need to fish deep, eight to ten feet, and it seems to me the water movement needs to be slight, not running hard in deep water. We caught most of our Trout Sunday with my drift sock hanging straight down.
In the early spring or late fall I like the three days prior to the full moon, because when trout are shallow they seem to require running water to be active.
Just my observation after more than 40 years fishing the Gulf.

If your fishing deep, 8 - 10 feet are you dragin on the bottom or tring CT ? If your tring CT how long a leader.

DS, I do both. I use a CT with three foot of steel leader on a 4/0 Gamkatsu Live Bait hook, and a split shot about a foot up the leader. I use either small Pinfish or finger Mullet. The Mullet always seem to be plentyful out deep. I always bring a cast net for bait. I also freeline the same baits without a CT.

I catch the majority of Trout on Pinfish tails (shinner tails) with a split shot, and a 3/0 Gamkatsu straight shanked worm hook on a 12" of 40 pound Fluorocarbon leader. I throw it as far behind the boat as I can. Let it sink to the bottom. Just as it hits bottom, work it upwards just like a jig, then let it settle back to the bottom. Most of the time the Trout will hit it on the drop. Let it sit still on the bottom ds, if you prefer to catch hardheads.
You can also fish the shinner tail under a CT, working it like a jig.

Most days you can see them schooling up on top. When it's rough, it's very had to catch them. If it's rough, I'll run up close to the hill and catch them.
Fish them the same as Pinfish. Except you have to hook Mullet thru the lips. They die real easy. Need small Mullet about four or five inches long. No more than six.
