Glad I Won Trailer Hub At NFGFC

Post by Harmsway »

Today I learned the value of a spare trailer hub.

When I won a trailer hub at a NFGFC raffle, I was , well, not overly excited even though it was one of the most expensive things on the table. It rattled around in the back of my truck for months.

Today, at the ramp, I smelled something burning. Turned out the trailer bearings on one side had disintegrated. Guess I caught it just in time; before it got really hairy.

I'll never forget the long down-trodden faces of my crew, not (I suspect) so much because they felt sorry for my mechanical dilemma or the money I was about to spend on repair, but because it looked like their day fishing was shot to H E Double-L.

Imagine their surprise when I pulled a new hub out of my truck. We were able to get the good ship Booyah! back on track in no time, and ended up catching a boat load of fish, too.

So here's to Will (no relation) of Capital City Trailers on North Monroe Street (566-6566) in Tallahassee who donated the trailer hub to NFGFC. :smt006 :smt038 :smt026 :smt023 I think I'll have Will check/replace the bearings on the other side next week. :smt045

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

That is very fortuitous and I know how good it felt saving the day. We all dread a fishing trip being ruined by mechanical problems.... But what I would love to hear is the fishing report for the "catching a boat load of fish".

I might just be the most unmechanically inclined person on this forum, but I have two hubs in the back of my truck for my boat trailer. They are a set that I took off after replacing them, in turn, they aren't brand new, but they were good to go when I changed them out, so they should be good enough to get me home should something happen while out and about.

Yep Will Thompson is good people, I had him replace my axle both springs and new hubs and bearings last year. He's top notch and his prices are great.

Everyone needs to check their trailer for loose wheels. Grab the top of your trailer wheel and rock it back and forth, if there is any play, jack up the trailer, remove the bearing buddy and cotter pin. Tighten castle nut until there is no play, replace cotter pin, apply grease in the fitting and you should be good to go. Keeping the wheel tight without play will help the bearings last.
