What fish?
Anyone know what this is? Some friends of friends caught it down south somewhere and they asked me and I said I could probably find out thanks to BBF.

Re: What fish?
Jolthead doesn't have the vertical bar through the eye like this one does. Either way, it's in the porgy family.
Re: What fish?
Looks like a young Whitebone Porgy to me. As they grow older the blotches are less pronounced. Good eating from what I hear. Definitely in the porgy family, upper mandible is longer than the lower one.

Re: What fish?
FYI, not 100% on fish, but lower jaw is mandible and upper jaw is maxilla. No upper and lower mandible.

Re: What fish?
Thanks all. The friend guessed it was a Porgy, but did not know which.
From an anatomical standpoint (I am a veterinarian), you are correct Salty. Upper is maxilla, lower is mandible.

Thanks for the correction gentleman.

According to Angler's Guide to Fishes of the Gulf of Mexica by Jerald Hoast and Mike Lane, illustrated by Duane Raver on page 296-297 it is a Grass Porgy (Calamus arctifrone) or aka Grass Bream, Shad,Porgy. Food value very good but small. One of the smallest porgies, seldom exceeds 8 inches.
