What's my motor worth?

Post by Rhodes »

I have a 1989 Yamaha Pro 50 horse on my J16 Skiff that went down this past weekend. It has burnt pistons. The bottom piston is bypassing. My mechanic tells me the motor is in need of a re-build which would include replacing the three pistons. The piston chambers are smooth so no need to oversize. The ballpark price for the re-build is $1500-$1600. I’m thinking of just selling off the motor for whatever I can get and maybe one day re-powering with a different motor. Here is my question; obviously the motor is worth something if not just for the scrap value. So what would be a reasonable price to ask for this motor in the condition it’s in.

Find someone who found a rock with their lower unit of same make motor. I bought a lower unit from a guy for my old Merc when I damaged the foot. They wanted $3000 do fix it. I only paid $3000 for the whole rig, boat motor, trailer, and add on's so I wasn't about to do that. A friend had a similar merc with a blown motor. I gave him a couple hundred dollars for the lower unit on his motor and we were both happy.
On the other hand maybe you can find a used motor with bad foot. Buy their top end.
Otherwise you pretty much have an anchor.
