My son have finally made it into Basic Training and is now a member of "Freedom Company 2-47 INF". They even have a "facebook" page @

I am proud of him. He volunteered to put himself in harms' way to defend our Nation’s ideals. Our country is in a time of need, and he responded. He is a great American, an outstanding son, and I am proud it was his choice to join the military.

It would be hard to beat Fort Benning in September and October. Looks like they've got it made pretty good, brick barracks (bet they call them dormitories these days), covered assembly area, etc.

Still, Drill Sargent Stone is Drill Sargent Stone; that's prolly not changed much since we were in (maybe less cussing).

Naw, seriously, I'm proud of him too, and I don't even know him. Go ARMY!

Harmsway, back in '96 I can tell you how they handled the cursing in the USMC...

Within a minute or two of our DIs taking possession of us they had us sit down and told us they had a VERY SERIOUS issue to discuss. They then said that they needed to know if a single Marine recruit would be offended by their cursing... but before answering, they wanted us to know that cursing allowed them to verbally express their frustrations, providing a bit of relief to them in trying times, versus... well... having to resort to other means of taking out their frustrations. They said they would give us a minute or two to consult as a platoon, and then return to take a vote. Took about a second for us to all agree, "LET'S LET THEM CURSE!" All I'm going to say on that one is that if they would have dished out even a single iota additional punishment without the cursing, I'm sure glad we let 'em do it!  :smt005

Congrats to your boy, Mike. I know you're proud of him and we all appreciate his service to the country.

As a former drill instructor, I used profanity on occasion. I also praised my charges when it was deserved. There is more than one way to get a point across, but in the old school Navy we weren't as politically-correct as I'm sure they are today with the current CIC.

That said, when I told them to drop and give me 50 or we did rapid-fire calisthenics in the soft beach sand, I definitely had their attention and the training was much easier afterwards. :D
