A very lost Duck- Hen Old Squaw!

Post by bman »

A hen old squaw came into our decoys Sunday at Apalachicola.
Have to admit I thought it was a big drake Buffy when I pulled the trigger.
When to pick it up and started freaking out!

The new PC name is a Longtail - but since this one is a hen I'm sticking with Old Squaw ;-)
Very few of them ever come this far south

Word from from friends up north is its a first year hen- Probably not worth mounting because of its plumage but I froze it whole anyway.
Who knows when I will ever kill another one!

I thought the little tail feather was cool!

Awesome. This early cold front has driven down more big ducks than usual. I have taken grey ducks and widgeon, which usually don't come until January.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

She is wrapped up in the freezer... I showed photos to my buddy up on Chesapeake bay and he says its probably a first year bird. Not bad plumage but far from perfect.
If I thought I'd never go up there to hunt I'd put her on the wall.
But maybe one day I'll get up there and harvest a good drake!

I may eat her... or find some one who wants her for a mount.
May call some DU friends. I know they have mounts for the Greenwings Duck ID contest.
