Garmin 162 NMEA ?

Post by dstockwell »

Am having the damdest time getting the 162 to send the info to the VHF (Uniden Polaris). Blue on 162 and green on VHF, so it must be in the 162 NMEA setup. :-? :x

Do you have the GPS transmitting via NMEA? You have to set the communications in the GPS to NMEA 0183. Also the negative NMEA wire from the radio has to be grounded.

Thanks Tom, I asked Garmin and they said same thing about the ground, need to do that. I went into the 162 setup and changed to do NMEA, so will have to see.

The grounding was my headache too. Remembering to switch the comms back to NMEA after using on the computer was another.

This is freakin crazy, the Uniden manual has this for the ACC connector.

Orange - Ext speaker (+)
Black - Ext speaker (-)
Green - GPS data in
Red - DC 13.8V
Bare Wire - Ground
Brown - Hailer (+) horn speaker
Blue - Hailer (-) horn speaker

NOTE: DC 13.8 and GND are for GPS ANT.

Yea if I hook Green to GPS blue which is NMEA out, and bare to a ground I do not get data. Been int the NMEA setup, but nota.

Lets see here, when I had the Eagle it sent data to the Uniden with just 1 wire. Now I get a Garmin and have to get the firmware updated because Garmin is different. :x

Hang in there Don. You will get it fixed soon. Garmin is good stuff, but they have some funny ways of doing things sometime.

I hope you are enjoying your new ride. Cooler weather is just around the conner here. It was 57 at Gyspy Bay this morning.
