going after some size
Me and my buddy decided enough with the trout we wanted to go after some bigger fish this weekend so we headed out to a fishing spot where we normally can find the big boys. After a beautiful drive to the landing where my bearing busted and my tire flew off the trailer we spent 3 hours getting the parts I needed to fix it. After a few hours of labor we finally fixed it and hit the water. Caught some bait and started fishing. Only got about 2 hours of fishing before a storm rolled in and started to rain so we left. But in those to hour we got a few cats 1 32 inch red that was super fat and 2 big black drum one was almost 80lbs. Was a lot of fun. All in all a good day on the water

Nice day of fishing it looks like, even with trailer issues. Do you guys regularly catch the bull reds in that area? What do you use for bait?
Probably a silly question but you're fishing the bottom right? How much lead does it take for you to hold bottom with the current through there?
Just curious....cuz in Jacksonville where we fished for the bull redfish we would regularly use at least a pound of lead to hold bottom, whether fishing for bait (croakers) or for the big boys. Though we had a ripping current through there...

Yea I fish the bottom. But i only use 4oz weights. And a 3 way swivel cause there are a lot of rocks and oysters the weights get caught on so when u catch a big one they break the line the weight is on occasionally cause its stuck on a rock or something. We do catch bull reds a decent bit. Didn't land it but 2 weeks agomy buddy hooked into one bigger than any of the fish in these pics but we seem to only get them in summer. When its hot they head for the deepest water they can find with structure. And bait varies. Just depends on what they want that day. We try a lot of stuff till we get a bite then stick with that for the day.

When I was a kid I'd spend the Summer with my Aunt/Uncle in Palm Bay. We'd fish under the causeway. Take a little 10' jon out, use a flathead shovel and scrape the barnacles off the pilings, pull the boat up on the concrete pad and set lanterns on each corner. We'd catch huge BD on crabs that we'd dip up swimming by and would get a few doz nice shrimp as well. Lots of fun but those big BD are full of worms.

O yeah they are tons of fun and deff are full of worms. I don't catch them to eat. Just to fight and revive then release. I just enjoy having my rod bend over and all so I'm not catching them to keep.

So do you lose your weights every time you bring them up to reload the hook? or do the fish just head into rocks and other structure and that's why they caught? I'm curious cuz i have primarily fished sandy bottoms and there's a spot or two that i've fished that are rocky like you describe and i'm constantly getting hooked on some rock or another and there's gotta be a way to not get caught as much....

No best way is to cast it and let it sit till u have a fish. Reeling it along the bottom will get it snagged a lot. Now even when u hook a fish sometimes they still drag the weight into a rock or something. That's y I use 50 lbs liter. 60lbs power pro and tie the weight with 30lbs liter. So if it does get snagged I lose the weight instead of the fish. But as far as there being no way to get snagged. If there is one I don't no it that's for sure

You fellas are the kind of guys I used to take with me........ going after gags. Amazing how a 12-15 lb gag in 42' will about snatch you over board, trying to get in that hole! An 18+ lb gag in 40-50' is a real tussle and often involves a little luck..... such as: the current working to your advantage. Good luck, gags and AJ's are waiting for you.
I also remember those giant drum along Florida's east coast bridges. Black Drum up to 90 lbs !! Jew Fish, too. OOPS, better watch out for word police, make that "Goliath Grouper".
