Post Labor Day outing
Got on the water a little after 6:00 am. It was still dark, but my GPS was working and it was only 30 minutes until a +4' high tide, so I was not concerned with the stray rock on my way out to spot #1.
Water temp was 84°, wind was out of the NW @ 5 kts and the air temp was a balmy 76°. I ran into a little floating grass on my way out and found a lot more when I arrived. After much thought I decided to try a topwater despite the grass. Within 10 minutes I landed the first of two reds for the day. An impressive 25" specimen.
About 15 minutes after that I landed red #2, A very nice looking 20" fish that fought like he was a lot bigger.
After following a large school of mullet that I was certain was attracting even more reds, I hooked up with what I thought was red #3, but was pleasantly surprised to land a stud of a 22" trout.
The reds were caught on an ancient skitterwalk that used to be pink and has had the hooks replaced 2 or 3 times. The trout was caught on a gold spoon that I changed from a treble to a 4/0 live bait hook.
After hitting spot #2 with no action and then #3 with the same results, I should have gone to the hill, but I stuck it out and tried deep, shallow and in between with no love other than a hardhead cat, a sail cat, and a short flounder.
All in all a good day on the water and enough action to keep me coming back.
